Nvidia has introduced DSX POD, a reference design for complete AI factories built inside modular containers and tested before they leave the factory. Announced at the company’s GTC Berlin conference on 21 October, the design is pitched squarely at speeding up AI infrastructure roll-out in Europe.
What Nvidia announced
Under the DSX POD model, hardware partners assemble compute, networking, cabling, rack-level power distribution and liquid cooling inside containers at their own facilities. Each unit is integrated and validated before shipment and then connected on arrival to the power, cooling and network infrastructure already prepared at the host site. In effect, most of the integration work that normally happens on a construction site moves onto a factory floor.
According to coverage by Data Center Knowledge, each pod holds seven Vera Rubin NVL72 racks, and Techzine reports that the units follow the ISO 668 standard container format. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang framed the logic in commercial terms: “An AI factory creates value when it starts producing tokens.”
The key numbers
- 14 days: Nvidia says deployment at a prepared site can fall from roughly six months to as little as two weeks.
- 17 partners: Anduril, Armada, Bull, Crusoe, DayOne, Dell Technologies, Delta, Eaton, Foxconn (Ingrasys), GIGABYTE, HPE, Lenovo, Pegatron, QCT, Schneider Electric, Vertiv and Wistron.
- Early 2027: the date from which Nvidia expects partners to deliver DSX POD AI factories.
Nvidia has not published a power rating for an individual pod. The 14-day figure also applies only once the site itself, including its grid connection and heat rejection, is ready.
Partners move in step
Several infrastructure suppliers made matching announcements in Berlin. Schneider Electric launched RapidScale, a portfolio for modular AI infrastructure whose first product is a pre-engineered reference design supporting the Vera Rubin platform. The company says its prefabrication manufacturing capacity has quadrupled since 2025 and that about 90% of the equipment integrated into RapidScale is made in-house. The design is validated to US ANSI standards, with IEC certification for other markets described as planned; the release did not name any European factory or deployment.
Vertiv, meanwhile, set out a factory-built approach with Nvidia that Norwegian operator Polar Data Centers is applying at a 41MW site, a project covered separately on DataCenters News.
IDC analyst Ashish Nadkarni, speaking to Data Center Knowledge, identified three likely use cases: sovereign AI projects that need physical isolation, smaller AI deployments for specific needs, and edge AI environments.
Why it matters for modular and edge in Europe
Containerised and prefabricated data centres have long been a niche option in Europe, used for temporary capacity, remote sites and telecoms edge locations. A reference design from the dominant AI chip supplier, backed by most of the large server makers and power-and-cooling vendors, gives the format a level of standardisation it has lacked at the high-density end.
For European developers, the most constrained resources are typically grid capacity, water, land and planning consent. Factory integration does not remove those constraints, but it does shorten the period between energisation and revenue, and it may make smaller, distributed sites more practical where power is available but a full campus build is not. The inclusion of European groups such as Bull and Schneider Electric on the partner list also leaves room for regional integrators to build pods closer to customers — relevant for sovereign-AI buyers wary of long supply chains.
The open questions are cost, delivery capacity at partner factories and how quickly European certification follows. Those details are likely to become clearer as the first units ship in 2027.
